The empirical correlation between the square root of the frequency shifts of the hydroxyl valency vibration bands and the differential heats of adsorption gave the best results among 21 possible correlations evaluated with available differential heats of adsorption data for 21 compounds, including C/sub 5/-C/sub 7/ n-alkanes, benzene, nitrobenzene, ketones, ethers, esters, amines, water, and argon on Aerosil silica.
