Effects of surface heterogeneity in adsorption from binary liquid mixtures--2. Adsorption from nonideal bulk solutions

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)

A systematic study was conducted of the adsorption from a nonideal binary liquid phase onto an ideal adsorbed phase on a heterogeneous solid. The condensation approximation method was used to derive an equation for the distribution function of the equilibrium constant of the phase exchange reaction. The method was used in numerical studies of the effect of adsorbed layer thickness and type of lattice of regular and non-athermal solutions on the distribution functions of benzene/carbon tetrachloride on aerosil, benzene/nitrobenzene on silica gel and alumina, and benzene/n-heptane on silica gel, for which adsorption data were available. An equation was also developed which described adsorption from binary solutions onto heterogeneous surfaces and permitted model studies which showed that surface heterogeneity has a greater influence than bulk-phase nonideality on the type, range, and magnitude of adsorption.
