Catalyst treatment process
This patent describes a method for treating a sulfide-containing heavy metal catalyst effective for converting synthesis gas to alcohols. The catalyst comprising: at least one sulfided metal element selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten and rhenium, optionally a surfided heavy metal element from the group consisting of cobalt, iron and nickel. A promoter comprising an alkali or alkaline earth element in free or combined form, and optionally a support. The improvement comprises treating the sulfided heavy metal element with an aqueous solution of a nitrogen-containing base, or thermally stable derivative thereof at an elevated temperature to produce a reaction mixture, Separating and drying the mixture and subjecting it to calcination.
