This patent describes a method for the fluid catalytic cracking of a hydrocarbon feed in a closed cyclone system, comprising the steps of: passing a suspension of the hydrocarbon feed and a catalyst through a riser conversion zone and cracking the hydrocarbon feed in the riser conversion zone thereby producing a mixture comprising the catalyst, unconverted feed and products of conversion, wherein a downstream end of the riser is enclosed by a reactor vessel; passing the mixture from the riser conversion zone to a riser cyclone separator through a first conduit; separating a portion of the catalyst from the mixture in the riser cyclone separator by passing the mixture in the riser cyclone in downward spiral flow along an inside wall of a cylindrical chamber of the riser cyclone, the separated portion of catalyst passing from the cylindrical chamber into an upstream end of a frusto-conical chamber, the upstream end being attached to the cylindrical changer; and passing the separated portion of catalyst to a downstream end of the frusto-conical chamber, the downstream end of the chamber having a narrower inside diameter than the upstream end.
