Journal Article · · NUEXCO. Monthly Report to the Nuclear Industry; (United States)

Of the four countries that are often termed the Nordic countries-Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway-two have chosen nuclear energy to supply a large portion of their electrical generation requirements. Sweden and Finland have achieved comparatively reliable, low-cost energy from nuclear power, though Sweden's reactor performance was down noticeably in 1992 due to federally mandated modifications. Both countries are forging the trail in nuclear waste storage planning and facilities and are working to ascertain the role nuclear power will play in both future generation and capacity expansion. Their approach is being closely monitored by other countries facing the conflict between anti-nuclear sentiments and the economic and environmental realities. This two-part article will focus first on Sweden's nuclear program, then investigate Finland's nuclear program.
