An improved process is described for stabilizing a nitro-aromatic-containing lubricating oil base stock derived from a hydrocracked bright stock, comprising: (a) contacting the hydrocracked bright stock with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst having hydrodenitrification activity under conditions effective to reduce the nitrogen content of the stock and to minimize cracking to produce a substantially nitrogen-free product; and (b) contacting the substantially nitrogen-free product with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst having hydrogenation activity under mild conditions to produce a stabilized lubricating oil base stock having improved oxidation stability as shown by oxidator BN.
