This paper reviews the research and development work on ion sources in the department of Plasma and Accelerators of the Egyptian AEA. Description is given of the dc ion sources used in our laboratory, namely, the duoplasmatron and the electrostatic oscillatory ion source. Then a survey is made of the radio frequency (rf) ion source starting with development of the radial-extraction rf source whereby the beam is extracted radially at the plasma center. The next modifications made on the radial-extraction source which aim at further improvements of the source's properties are the introduction of central constriction to the plasma tube, then the addition of an electron gun to inject an electron beam into the rf plasma.
