A number of 1-aryl-2,5-dithiohydrazodicarbonamides are synthesized, and their friction and wear properties are evaluated on a four-ball machine using paraffin oil as a base oil. The additive, 1-p-Cl-phenyl-2,5-dithiohydrazodicarbonamide, is found to be equally effective on steel bearing balls of different compositions. The shape and elemental composition of the wear-scars were investigated by SEM and by Auger Electron Spectroscopy, respectively. 15 refs.
