Four-ball wear tests conducted at a bulk temperature of 370C have been used to evaluate vapor phase lubrication of a series of liquid lubricants. A second study has been carried out to evaluate the rate of chemical reactions, resulting in deposit formation on specimens of the same bearing metals as the wear test, in an oven maintained at constant temperatures in the range of 500C to 700C. The use of calculated initial film formation rates coupled with the identification of chemical products in the four-ball wear scar have been used to develop a kinetic model that can be used to calculate the temperature in the bearing contact.
