Measurement of the D/sup */ hadronic cross section at 200 GeV/c

The cross section for charged D/sup */ production with a 200 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ beam incident on a beryllium target was measured with a two-arm spectrometer. The strategy was to trigger on the muon from the semileptonic decay of a charm particle in one arm while reconstructing the mass of the associated charm particle in the other arm. Of the 1.9 million recorded events 382 thousand contained reconstructed triggering muons. Using the mass difference technique often employed in D/sup */ studies, a signal of 32 +/- 11 charged D/sup */'s was isolated. This corresponds to a charged D/sup */ production cross section of 212 +/- 73 ..mu..b per Be nucleus of 24 +/- 8 ..mu..b/nucleon if the cross section in both the D/sup *//sup +/ and /sup *//sup -/ charge modes. A signal of 32 +/- 11 charged D/sup */'s implies 36 +/- 12% of the 382 thousand events with reconstructed muons contained charm.
