Study of charm production in 205-GeV/c hadronic interactions

Hadronic charm production was investigated with a two arm magnetic spectrometer. The experimental strategy was to trigger on the muon from the semileptonic decay of a charm particle in one arm while reconstructing the mass of its associatively produced partner in the other arm. Evidence of charm meson production through several charged particle decay modes is described and model dependent cross sections are obtained. An excess of 184 +/- 57 combinations above background for the D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup -/..pi../sup +/ mode was observed and corresponds to a D/sup 0/ production cross section of 22.3 +/- 6.9 ..mu..b per nucleon. The K..pi pi.. mass plot failed to reveal a significant signal for the D/sup +/-/ ..-->.. K/sup -/+/..pi../sup +/-/..pi../sup +/-/ decay mode. Based on the K..pi pi.. mass plot, the 95% confidence upper limit on the DD vector production cross section is found to be less than 30.5 ..mu..b per nucleon. An effect was observed in the psi..pi.. mass plot. If the authors interpret this effect as the D/sub s/ ..-->.. psi..pi.. decay mode, the ratio of inclusive D/sub s/ to inclusive D/sup 0/ production cross section as a function of the branching ratio D/sub s/ ..-->.. psi..pi.. is also presented.
