This paper investigates the selective dissolution of cadmium from a Pb-Cd (9.9 at .%) alloy in chloride solutions in order to test a model for the kinetics of selective dissolution of the electronegative component of a eutectic alloy. The eutectic consists essentially of the pure lead and cadmium phases; the kinetics of dissolution of pure cadmium is diffusion controlled. The authors determined the partial currents from the dissolution of cadmium from the alloy by means of a rotaing disk electrode with a ring in conjunction with inversion voltammetry. The dependence of the rate of dissolution of cadmium from the alloy on the duration of the dissolution process is shown. It was found that the rate of dissolution is greatest at the start of dissolution and regularly decreases with time.
