A study has been made of radical formation in the adsorption of aromatic molecules with various structures, on pentasil. It has been shown that on the pentasil, the same as on H mordenite, there are strong oxidizing centers that are capable of ionizing aromatic compounds, forming the corresponding cation radicals; in the case of pentasil, however, a number of special features are manifested, due to diffusional complications. Experiments with blockage of the outer surface of pentasil have confirmed that the major part of the radical species is formed on centers localized within the channels. The role of chemisorbed oxygen in the formation of aromatic cation radicals is examined critically.
