A superdeformed band has been found in {sup 142}Eu. It is populated with 1.2(2)% of the total {gamma}-ray intensity that decayed into {sup 142}Eu via the reaction {sup 120}Sn({sup 27}Al,5{ital n}){sup 142}Eu at 152 MeV. The strength of the band is similar to that previously reported in {sup 143}Eu, where the superdeformed band is populated with an intensity of 1.1(1)%. This is unexpected, since both total Routhian surface (TRS) and cranked modified oscillator (MO) calculations predict that the superdeformed band in {sup 143}Eu becomes yrast at lower spin than that in {sup 142}Eu. This difference is {similar_to}4{h_bar} in the MO calculations and {similar_to}8{h_bar} in the TRS. Extrapolation of the ``normal``-deformed yrast states in {sup 143}Eu shows, however, that a difference of {similar_to}8{h_bar} in spin corresponds to a change in the relative energy of the superdeformed and normal-deformed yrast lines of only {similar_to}1 MeV.
