Title: Instrumentation selection, installation, verification and calibration at the passive cooling experimental facility for a hot/arid climate

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6950962· OSTI ID:6950962

The purpose of the Passive Cooling Experimental Facility is to acquire data and perform experiments regarding different passive cooling techniques and strategies. In order to adequately explain the cooling techniques employed, sufficient instrumentation and data logging equipment was installed. Sensors were selected based on their accuracy, cost effectiveness, and ability to calibrate consistently and with ease. The sensors and instrumentation and the basis for their selection, installation, verification and calibration are described. Installation and calibration details are provided for certain selected critical sensors, i.e., heat flux meters, pyrgeometers, etc. The following list summarizes the critical sensors and instruments selected and installed. Heat flux: Hy-Cal Engineering BI-7 thermoelectric sensors; Temperature (wet and dry bulb): Copper-constantine thermocouples, Hewlett Packard reference junction; Pyranometers: Eppley PSP, LICOR photovoltaic pyranometers and Eppley Shadow Band 8 to 48 pyranometer; Infrared Radiometer: Eppley PIR pyrgeometer; Ambient Wind Velocity: Gill Propeller Vane Anemometer by R.M. Young; Air Flow: EII Air Flow Meters; and Infiltration: SF/sub 6/ gas chromatography.
