Catalysts containing cobalt, or iron (4-18 with or without approx. 1 magnesium promoter were prepared by impregnation on high-surface area silica gel, or on low-surface area (large-pored) silicon carbide, alumina, or silica followed by reduction to the metal by hydrogen at 450/sup 0/C. The activity of these catalysts and various commercial catalysts was tested in a differential recycle reactor that acted as a continuous stirred tank reactor for the hydrogenolysis of propane at 150/sup 0/-330/sup 0/C and 1.1-2.1 atm. The unpromoted iron catalysts deactivated rapidly and could not be regenerated with hydrogen. The other catalysts exhibited an activity that was proportional to the metal area for each metal, decreased in the order Ru, Co, Ni, Fe, and was about 10 times higher on magnesium-promoted than on unpromoted catalysts. The kinetic data were fitted to a power rate equation. The selectivity for ethane depended strongly on the metal and was relatively insensitive to support and promoter but decreased in the order Ru, Co, Ni, Fe.
