Kinetic study of the HO/sub 2/ + HO/sub 2/ reaction
The kinetics of the reaction HO/sub 2/ + HO/sub 2/ ..-->.. products: (1) were studied in the pressure range of 5 to 770 torr at 296/sup 0/K with flash photolysis of Cl/sub 2/ in the presence of CH/sub 3/OH and O/sub 2/ as a source of HO/sub 2/ radicals. These radicals were monitored by ultraviolet absorption at 22 nm. The rate coefficient k/sub 1/ was found to be pressure dependent with a low-pressure limiting value of k/sub 1//sup 0/ = (1.4 +- 0.2) x 10/sup -12/ cm/sup 3/ s/sup 1/. Above about 50 torr pressure the rate coefficient increases and becomes (2.5 +- 0.1) x 10/sup 12/ cm/sup 3/ s/sup -1/ at 1 atm of N/sub 2/. Thus this reaction proceeds both by direct abstraction as well as addition.
