Rate constants for the reactions of HO/sub 2/ with OH and with HO/sub 2/
- Oak Ridge National Lab., TN
Hydroperoxyl radicals are generated by the flash photolysis of H/sub 2/O vapor in systems containing 2% O/sub 2/ and either CO or He. Observation of HO/sub 2/ decay kinetics at 220 nm coupled with knowledge of the H/sub 2/O dissociation yield permits a direct evaluation of epsilon/sub HO/sub 2//, k/sub 5/(HO/sub 2/ + HO/sub 2/), and k/sub 6/(HO/sub 2/ + OH). For system conditions of 1 atm, 296/sup 0/K, and 21 torr of H/sub 2/O, the results are the following: epsilon/sub max/ = (1050 +- 140) M/sup -1/ cm/sup -1/ at 205 nm, k/sub 5/ = (4.0 +- 0.7) x 10/sup 9/ M/sup -1/ s/sup -1/, and k/sub 6/ = (7.0 +- 1.5) x 10/sup 10/ M/sup -/ s/sup -1/. Comparisons with other reported values, including our own previous work, are discussed in terms of pressure effects, the effect of H/sub 2/O on k/sub 5/, and the possible reaction products of the HO/sub 2/ self-reaction. 1 figure, 4 tables.
