This patent describes an optical transmission network comprising (a) a first coherent light source for emitting radiation at a first wavelength lambda/sub 1/, (b) a second coherent light source for emitting radiation at a second wavelength lambda/sub 2/, (c) a wavelength multiplexer for receiving wavelength lambda/sub 1/ radiation from the first light source and wavelength lambda/sub 2/ radiation from the second light source. The wavelength multiplexer is adapted to output multiplexed radiation comprising a wavelength lambda/sub 1/ component and a wavelength lambda/sub 2/ component, (d) power dividing means for distributing an aliquot portion of the multiplexed radiation over each of a plurality of transmission paths, and (e) wavelength selective modulator means incorporated in at least one of the transmission paths for modulating information onto the lambda/sub 1/ component of the multiplexed radiation transmitted over the one transmission path.
