A crystalline lead aluminum borate composition is described consisting essentially of lead, aluminum, and boron oxides and having the general formula (x) PbO. (y)24. Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. (z) B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ where x, y, and z are numbers representing molar amounts such that the mole fraction of PbO calculated as x/(x+y+z), is within the range of about 0.5 to about 0.8; the mole fraction of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ calculated as y/(x+y+z) is within the range of about 0.05 to about 0.3; and the mole fraction of B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ calculated as z/(x+y+z) is within the range of about 0.05 to 0.25 and the composition having significant x-ray diffraction lines.
