The aromatic fraction of a Homestead, Kentucky, coal extract will be analyzed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using glass capillary columns. The aromatic fraction will be further analyzed by gas chromatography using sulfur specific flame photometric detection. Some of the identified compounds will be traced to their possible biological origins. Sulfur-containing aromatic compounds will be particularly sought. Possible origins of organo-sulfur constituents will be postulated based on the chemical nature of those sulfur components detected. The gas chromatographic retention characteristics of a variety of underivatized phenols will be studied using Superox-20M coated on fused-silica. The relative retention times of these compounds will be measured at 160/sup 0/, 150/sup 0/, and 140/sup 0/C in order to determine the effect of operating temperature on relative retention. This information will be used to predict relative retention times of phenols for which no standards are available. The linear temperature-programmed retention indices of the solutes will be measured. Theory describing the factors governing the retention of phenols on this phase will be described. Lastly, the chemical structure of Superox-20M will be studied by nuclear magnetic resonance.
