GLC methods for separation of complex mixtures of phenols from coal liquefaction products
The retention characteristics of a variety of underivatized phenols eluted from fused-silica cpaillary columns coated with Superox-20 have been evaluated. The relative retention times of these compounds have been determined at 160/sup 0/, 150/sup 0/, and 140/sup 0/C and the effects of operating temperature have been evaluated within these limits. The use of high resolution gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy with the same column has led to detailed characterization of phenolic constitutents and identification of 29 phenols from a SRC-II process middle distillate. These technizues are useful for the separation and identification of individual phenolic components present in complex mixtures. 5 figures, 4 tables.
