Supernova remnants

Journal Article · · Am. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6940282
The history of the study of supernova remnants is discussed. A description of the events of the explosion and the evolution of the remnants are included. The case of the Crab Nebula is described. Spectroscopic studies of the elements involved in the supernova remnants are reported. The importance of supernovae as sources of energy in the galaxy is discussed. Supernovae must be included in any study of the interstellar medium. They are like laboratories in interstellar space where a variety of physical processes can be observed. (RJC)
