Review of the Soviet program on nuclear explosives for the national economy

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6935064
The Soviet Union has a vigorous program for the development of peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. A summary is presented of the Soviet nuclear projects. A contrast is made with the U.S. Plowshare program and the Soviet program. The Soviet applications are presented in tabular data, along with a listing of the executed and proposed projects relative to each application. There have been 7 executed projects and 8 proposed projects; one of the latter involves some 250 nuclear explosions. One application, oil secondary recovery, has not received any consideration in the U.S. Plowshare Program. The Soviets have used an oil field in which production has declined, detonated a nuclear explosive, and increased production. Generally, the descriptions of the specific nuclear plans conclude with an economic statement of the value of the project.
