138 rigs are operating in 59-field Shengli area

The Shengli area headquartered at Dongying City in Shandong Province, lies 195 miles southeast of Beijing on and offshore from the Yellow River delta. Although referred to as a field, Shengli actually comprises 59 known ail and gas fields scattered over an area of some 14,700 mi{sup 2}. Forty-eight of the fields are onstream at a combined rate of 664,000 bopd making Shengli the second largest producer in the country. A major share of Chinese oil industry resources has been concentrated at Shengli in recent years because of excellent success in finding oil that could be developed rapidly, and its proximity to industry, domestic refineries and export facilities. In seven years, this effort found 37 new fields and doubled the area's production which now accounts for almost one-fourth of the national total. This paper presents a current look on what's happening in this area.
