Worldwide deep drilling activity during 1993 increased 10% from 406 wells in 1992. Cumulatively, operators spent $3.4 billion to drill 7.7 million ft of hole on the 453 wells drilled deeper than 15,000 ft in 1993. Last year's 16,960-ft global deep well average depth is fairly constant with 1992's 16,863-ft average depth. Bit usage also remained steady, rising from 23 bits per well in 1992 to 24 bits per well last year. Operators spent about $339,000 more per well in 1993 than the previous year. Globally, 185 wells were drilled deeper than 15,000 ft offshore, 268 were drilled onshore. Worldwide offshore drilling average 17,027-ft, 19 bits and 897 tons of tubulars each, and cost operators about $9.945 million per well. Worldwide onshore deep wells averaged a 16,913-ft TD, 32 bits and 527 tons of tubulars, and cost operators about $5.730 million each. This report combines PEI's annual US Deep Well and the International Deep Well Reports for a comprehensive look at deep drilling statistics worldwide.
