1980 Joint Association Survey on drilling costs. [Monograph]

The 1980 survey findings show a 41.8% increase over 1979 in the costs of drilling and equipping oil and gas wells and dry holes for a total of about $22,800 million. The survey shows a 1.7% decrease to 4099 ft in oil-well depth at a $66.36 average cost per foot (13.8% increase); a 2.6% increase to 5636 ft in gas-well depth at a $95.16 average cost per foot (18% increase). The average depth of the 18,233 dry holes in 1980 was 5108 ft (decrease of 2.8%); average cost per foot was $73.70, an increase of 14.1%. The total number of wells drilled in 1980 (62,011) increased 27.8%, and the total footage drilled (296 million) increased 24.6%. The total cost of offshore wells completed during the year increased 19.9% to $3,846 million; the total number of offshore wells increased 1.0%, with an 18.9% increase in cost per foot to $307.62. A total of 53 tables show oil-, and gas-, and dry-hole drilling data for total US, total onshore US and total offshore US as well as offshore federal waters and Gulf of Mexico-Northern. In addition, expenditures are reported for individual states and for the subdivisions of Alaska, California, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas.
