OSTI ID:6931591
This patent describes a method for producing a dried particulate coal fuel comprising: (a) reducing raw coal feedstock to a particle size having an average diameter of about 0.2 to 0.5 inches; (b) drying the resultant particulate raw coal to a moisture content of less than about 10 percent by weight by contacting it with a stream of drying gas in a drying zone; (c) while the coal is in the drying zone, spraying and intimately mixing the dried coal with a deactivating composition at a temperature between about 190/sup 0/F. and about 230/sup 0/F., the composition being selected from the group consisting of light cycle oil, heavy cycle oil, clarified slurry oil, solutions of durene in gasoline distillates or residuums derived from petroleum or coal and mixtures of two or more of the preceding; and, (d) subsequently removing the coal from the drying zone and cooling it.
