This patent describes a method for producing a dried particulate coal fuel comprising: (a) reducing raw coal feedstock to a particle size having an average diameter of about 0.2 to about 0.5 inches; (b) drying the resultant particulated raw coal to a moisture content of less than about 10 percent by weight by contacting it with a stream of drying gas; and (c) spraying and intimately mixing the dried coal with deactivating composition comprising a solution of between about 10 and about 30 percent by weight of durene in gasoline.
