We have measured the rate constants of the reaction of cumyl and tetralyl peroxide radicals with certain halogenated toluenes and xylenes in the range 393-423 K. It has been established that substituents in the para position relative to the methyl group exhibit a resonance effect. It is shown that the rate constants for primary (radical from p-xylene), secondary, and tertiary peroxide radicals reacting with p-xylene vary in the ratio 30:20:1-2.
