A recent test programme carried out under contract for the US Bureau of Mines is described. The results show that respirable dust from longwall mining can be significantly reduced without adversely affecting production by increasing the depth of cut of the shearer. Deep, slow cutting has a lower energy requirement, but imposes greater mechanical stress on the machine components.
