Terrace-pit mining tryout in west. [Wyoming]

The use of shovels and trucks for overburden removal in the Powder River Basin area represents the first significant departure from the traditional use of draglines in western surface coal mines in the USA. This concept, called terrace-pit mining, includes the use of a moving, multi-bench, openpit configuration. This article describes, with the aid of step-by-step diagrams, the design of the mining and reclamation sequencing of a site near Sheridan, Wyoming.
