While traditional utilities have been dominated by engineers, economists, financial analysts, and lawyers, the new energy company also requires keen business skills. Utilities will have to embrace business tactics used everyday in competitive markets. Constant improvement in all areas, staff training, and an increased focus on the customer and product quality/leadership must become hallmarks of the new utility industry. Rather than bemoan these changes, utilities should lead by working together with customers, regulators, and potential competitors to develop a strategy for change.
