Journal Article · · Rodale's New Shelter; (United States)
OSTI ID:6927489

A passive solar house, built in the mountains of Oregon, is described with floor plans and photographs. Designed for comfort in winter and summer, at a cost of less than $50,000, electric bills are about $17 per month. Design features described include an airlock entry (an energy efficient stopover; it is lined with windows to let in sunlight), solar batch water heater, sunroom, wood-burning stove, automatic air-circulating system for automatic comfort, and others. The kitchen of this two bedroom one bath home has a retractable thermal shade to seal off the kitchen space and help keep the rest of the house cool. Provisions for future expansion are provided.
