New technology and the environment

With the possible exception of the nuclear industry, no other industry has been touched as significantly by environmental concerns as has the chemical industry. The forces that have brought this issue center stage are accelerating and forward-looking companies are leading the transition to cleaner, safer, and more efficient plants-a new paradigm in the way things are done in our industry. The transition began quietly in the 1970s. In this new way of thinking, the primary driving forces for products and processes are no longer only markets and process economics, but also environmental considerations. We call this enviro-economics. Indeed, entire new markets and unprecedented competitive advantages will be created for some companies by the enviro-economic factor. Those companies clever enough to develop new products and processes that have minimal environmental impact will achieve leadership positions. This paper reports that the fact that environmental costs are an integral part of process economics is having a profound influence on technical developments in the chemical, petroleum refining, and power generation industries.
