Corporate implications of competition: a change of direction
The author notes that the utility industry, long one of the most stable and predictable segments of American business, is now struggling to cope in an environment of uncertainty and change. This environment, made even more uncertain by the onset of competition, demands that utility executives reorient their traditional ways of thinking. Such a reorientation is particularly important in three key areas: marketing, diversification, and succession planning. A new kind of leadership must be developed if utilities are to grow and prosper. Today's environment is forcing electric utilities to turn away from their time-honored build and grow strategies, and adopt a more flexible, market-oriented stance, common to companies which must function in a competitive environment.
