Part 1 of the hearing record covers four days of testimony on possible abuses in the administration of the Superfund program by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the responses of EPA personnel to subpoenas and requests for documentation. Principal witnesses on those dates were Rita M. Lavelle, staff members of the EPA, and their legal counsel. The purpose of the hearings was to examine EPA documents to determine whether EPA witnesses have been truthful and whether there is evidence of conflict of interest or the alteration of agency records. Ms. Lavelle defended her administration of the Superfund program against a contempt of Congress citation.
