The Midwestern Basins and Arches regional aquifer system is composed of unconsolidated deposits and Silurian and Devonian bedrock. The area of data collection (more than 90,000 square miles) is situated on a complex of structural arches (Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee Arches) that are bounded on the east, north and west by structural basins. This summary is a presentation of the major results of this study, namely the regional hydrogeologic framework, hydrology, groundwater chemistry and groundwater use. The hydrogeologic framework within a boundary determined by the isocon of 10,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids in the carbonate-rock aquifer, has been defined in terms of stratigraphic units and their extent and thickness, and correlated across the regional arches. The regional aquifer system is predominantly composed of shale in the lower and upper confining units and generally limestone and dolomite in the carbonate-rock aquifer. A two-layer, steady-state, numerical groundwater-flow model was constructed to simulate regional groundwater flow within the active freshwater system. The chemistry of groundwater from wells penetrating the aquifer system was classified into eight generic types based on the percentage of major cations and anions and into five categories based on the concentration of dissolved solids. Groundwater use within the study area was compiled from existing State water-use data of users capable of producing more than 100,000 gallons per day.
