Biotechnology: Role of institutional biosafety committees

Universities, companies, and other organizations using recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid technology in laboratories established biosafety committees to implement safety guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health for the conduct of recombinant DNA research. This report focuses on (1) the membership of the biosafety committees, (2) the diversity of their functions and activities, (3) their implementations of the NIH guidelines for research involving recombinant DNA molecules, and (4) their role in overseeing the use of genetically engineered organisms in the environment.
