Organometallic and reactor studies of the thiophene hydrodesulfurization mechanism

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6923066

This dissertation contains a general introduction and four papers. The introduction is a review of the mechanisms of thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) as proposed in literature. The papers are: equilibrium studies of displacement of [eta][sup 1](S)-thiophenes (T) from Cp(CO)(PPh[sub 3])Ru([eta][sup 1](S)-T)[sup +]; equilibrium and kinetic studies of S-coordinated T in Cp(CO)[sub 2]Ru([eta][sup 1](S)-T)[sup +] and Cp(CO)(PPh[sub 3])Ru([eta][sup 1](S)-T)[sup +]: models for T adsorption on HDS catalysts; reactions of 2- benzo[b]thienyl(2-BTyl) complexes with acid to give Cp(PMe[sub 3])[sub 2]Ru([eta][sup 1](S)-BT)[sup +] and Cp(CO)(PPh[sub 3])Ru([eta][sup 1](S)-BT)[sup +]: a model for benzo[b]thiophene (BT) deuterium exchange on HDS catalysts; and studies of mechanism of T hydrodesulfuriztion: [sup 2]H NMR and mass spectral analysis of 1,3- butadiene produced in the deuterodesulfurization of T over PbMo[sub 6. 2]S[sub 8] catalyst.
