This dissertation contains a general introduction and four papers. The introduction is a review of the mechanisms of thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) as proposed in literature. The papers are: equilibrium studies of displacement of {eta}{sup 1}(S)-thiophenes (T) from Cp(CO)(PPh{sub 3})Ru({eta}{sup 1}(S)-T){sup +}; equilibrium and kinetic studies of S-coordinated T in Cp(CO){sub 2}Ru({eta}{sup 1}(S)-T){sup +} and Cp(CO)(PPh{sub 3})Ru({eta}{sup 1}(S)-T){sup +}: models for T adsorption on HDS catalysts; reactions of 2- benzo[b]thienyl(2-BTyl) complexes with acid to give Cp(PMe{sub 3}){sub 2}Ru({eta}{sup 1}(S)-BT){sup +} and Cp(CO)(PPh{sub 3})Ru({eta}{sup 1}(S)-BT){sup +}: a model for benzo[b]thiophene (BT) deuterium exchange on HDS catalysts; and studies of mechanism of T hydrodesulfuriztion: {sup 2}H NMR and mass spectral analysis of 1,3- butadiene produced in the deuterodesulfurization of T over PbMo{sub 6. 2}S{sub 8} catalyst.
