Ion-exchanged ultrastable Y zeolites--2. Alkaline earth-exchanged zeolites

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

Ultrastable Y zeolite was exchanged with magnesium, calcium, strontium, or barium nitrate at pH 2.5-4.3 and characterized by IR spectroscopy, pyridine adsorption, and other techniques. The results showed that the metal cations exchanged at pH Vertical Bar3: 4 predominantly exchanged for zeolitic protons and that at lower pH the exchange decreased owing to competition for exchange sites by hydronium ions; that the crystallinity and thermal stability of the exchanged zeolites was high and decreased with increasing cation radius; and that the zeolites contained both Broensted and Lewis acid sites. The effect of steaming on the zeolites is discussed.
