By using high-resolution electron beam techniques, we demonstrate that production of XeF(B) by electron impact dissociative excitation of XeF/sub 2/ occurs via the XeF/sub 2/ /sup 1/..sigma../sup +//sub u/ excited state. Furthermore, measurements of the fluorescence yield from the transitions XeF(B,v', N'..-->..X, v'', N'') in the range 325--360 nm, combined with published Franck--Condon factors for these transitions, show that dissociative excitation of XeF/sub 2/ produces XeF(B) that is vibrationally hot but rotationally cool. Relative vibrational populations of XeF(B, v', N') are derived.
