The dynamics of the motion of a fissioning nucleus from the ground state through a multidimensional potential barrier to scission is studied in a model based on the Fokker--Planck equation (FPE) for the distribution function of the collective variables. The multidimensional FPE is solved by the reduced-propagator method. The effect of the nuclear friction on the speed at which the quasistationary probability current through the saddle point is established and on the extent of the deviation of the parameters of the stationary distribution function near the top of the barrier from the corresponding equilibrium values is analyzed. The trajectories of the fissioning system and the fragment-mass-distribution variances for different modes of description of the fission dynamics, specifically for the case when the investigation of the evolution of the fissioning nucleus starts from the ground state and the case when the investigation starts from the saddle point, are compared.
