Oil and gas developments in north mid-continent in 1974

Iowa drilling activity during 1974 consisted of 4 exploratory holes, all dry, and 220 holes drilled by gas storage companies. Crude oil production in Kansas during 1974 (61,690,731 bbl) dropped 6.8% below the 1973 level. The state's refineries processed 133,632,586 bbl, which was more than twice its production. Natural gas production (894,307,867 Mcf) decreased 1%. Drilling increased 25% from the 1973 figure, with 2,825 holes reported; 51% of the holes drilled for oil or gas were successful. Panoma gas area, in SW. Kansas, had 146 of the 389 gas-well completions. Nebraska, with 230 holes, had 30% more completions in 1974 than the year before. Drilling was primarily in the Denver Basin and Chadron arch areas. Thirteen field discoveries, continued expansion of Bush Creek field, Hitchcock County, and a Dundy County discovery highlighted Nebraska drilling. Exploration by deep tests in the Forest City Basin and by shallow holes in the southwestern part of the state were Missouri's main areas of interest in 1974. No tests were drilled for oil or gas in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
