Oil and gas developments in north mid-continent in 1972

Total liquid hydrocarbon production in Kansas during 1972 was 104,346,527 bbl, down slightly from production in 1971. Three-fourths of this production (73,743,685 bbl) was crude oil; 30,602,843 bbl of natural gasoline and natural gas liquids were produced. Natural gas production (898,618,234 Mcf) increased slightly, but helium production (2,734,875 Mcf) dropped 5.9% from 1971. Drilling increased 1.8% over 1971, with 2,458 holes reported; 52% of the holes drilled for oil or gas were successful. Panoma gas area, with Council Grove production, had 262 gas well completions. Nebraska, with 292 holes, had 62.7% more well completions in 1972 than the preceding year. Drilling in Nebraska was concentrated in the Denver Basin. There was little activity in Missouri, and no tests for oil or gas were reported in Iowa and Minnesota. Seven stratigraphic tests were drilled in Wisconsin; information on these tests has not been released. (10 refs.)
