Carbonate field developed to recover 37% primary oil. [Egypt]

Carefully engineered production practices will result in oil recovery of over 37% from the Alamein field, located 80 miles southwest of Alexandria, Egypt. Operated by Western Desert Operating Petroleum Co. on behalf of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corp. and Phillips Petroleum Co., the fractured dolomite reservoir has already produced over one-third of its original oil in place through a natural water drive mechanism. It is expected to produce all recoverable reserves without artificial lift or induced energy. Completion practices and production policies followed to obtain maximum recovery commensurate with practical economics are described. Specific methods are discussed for (1) perforating and stimulating wells to avoid water production and (2) individually testing wells to determine optimum rate to maintain reservoir pressure and discourage water coning. The high expected recovery efficiency is attributed to 2 main factors: completion techniques and withdrawal rates policy.
