Approximate method for fast neutron transport streaming within duct geometries

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6918303
An approximate method, employing albedo principles, for the calculation of fast neutron streaming through two-legged rectangular ducts constructed on concrete walls is presented. A scattering model called the method of successive scattering is introduced to develop a new semi-empirical formula that yields values for the differential albedo. An albedo-transport equation is employed to analyze the attenuation of fast neutrons within duct geometries. Two different sizes of concrete ducts are analyzed numerically. The results, in terms of dose attenuation factor, are compared to experimental data. Overall agreement is very good. It seems to be confirmed that the differential albedo function containing more detailed treatment of higher-order scattering components will lead to decreasing the discrepancies between theoretical and experimental results. The use of the Albedo-Analytical Model method, which represents a simplified application of the albedo concept, can be a powerful technique for saving computer time and is suitable for a quick estimation of shielding problems.
