In recent years there has been an increased interest in ruthenium complexes with sulfur donor ligands, in part because of the high catalytic activity of RuS[sub 2] in various hydrotreating processes. As a part of this development, many examples of ruthenium thiolate complexes have been reported. During the course of work to prepare mononuclear ruthenium complexes with both alkyl and sulfur donor ligands, the authors have isolated and characterized new dinuclear complexes with bridging thiolate ligands. They report here the synthesis and structural characterization of a ruthenium thiolate complex which contains hexamethylbenzene (HMB) as the supporting ligand. The structure permits a comparison with previously reported analogous structures containing pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligands.
