Recycling: A key part of the solid waste equation

Recycling programs are gaining momentum around the country as state and local officials seek ways to reduce pressure on landfills. Finding markets for recovered materials will take some creative efforts. Many municipalities are now developing waste management strategies, addressing all phases of the issue, including materials recovery, or recycling. A complete strategy includes waste reduction -- eliminating waste at its source. Statistics are given for the amounts of U.S. waste recycling. Some laws are now passed encouraging the purchase of recycled products and eliminating some marketing impediments.
